Swapped the pedals, lubed the chain, aired the tires and good to go: Crosscheck fixed. Quick reentry. Just in time to see the poison oak bloom. blurred, but not colored...
I took the sneaky pete trails into town to see the boys at Joselyn's (what are y'all thinking?) and show off the Western Molester mustache I'm running right now. Over the course of the Western Trip I took the opportunity to grow a beard (saw this here first). I'm shaving it off in stages for maximum effect. There were 3 other tire tracks on the lower section. Who's riding that stuff? No one will admit it. Which is wise.
M____ invited me out for a quick ride to that one spot by the beach (you know the one) where we lingered and watched the day trippers ride by on the bike path. Saw a lot of bikes that did not fit...Then a guy rides up on his orange 70's Nishiki framed fixie and asks if we have a pump. I do and set it up for him, as he clearly knows not what he does. As he's airing his tires and dropping his bike, M____ asks him if that's one of those, uh, fixers. He rose up and sank his teeth into it for a while- while ignoring our bikes right next to him. Man, we gave him so much rope. But he was a nice kid, so we helped him avoid blowing the tube when his bead began creeping (saved by the brake pad holding it from full slip). Then M____ , who is a better rider (fixed or anything else) than I'll ever be, blew his mind by skidding no handed all over the place after all the repair. He'd been well and truly convinced we were green. Which we were.
The real point of this is: we climbed Veteran's next and went up the trail by the stairs- which was completely unknown to me. I've lived here 8 years now, and always assumed the Presidio fenced off that whole area. Nope. We didn't cross a fence until Hwy 68! Who knew? I'm so stoked. New (to my arrogant ass) trails right in my own backyard after all this time? Rad. We came out on that doubletrack above the Hwy 68 Gate into Pebble Beach. The one you always see and think you'll explore one day. Sure worth it as a dirt connector if nothing else, and there're several more trails up there we didn't take...
And to think I've been thinking of organizing a peninsula-wide sneak. Hubris. It'll have to be a group effort if we really want to hit all the sneaky stuff. Speaking of- anybody want to meet at the bocce courts on Friday evening at 6:30pm for a booze'n'cruise trail style? Game on. Tentative plans for trails through Pebble Beach. Maybe we'll see what's up above the Presidio? It's out of my hands now.
Also, for them that need guidance: WATCH "THE SEARCHERS" AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
"Injun'll chase a thing until he figgers he's chased it enough. Same thing when he runs. Seems he'll never learn there's such a thing as a critter that just keeps coming." - John Wayne as Uncle Ethan. Perhaps the finest Western ever made. Epic. Sad. Filmed in Moab.

Can't make this Friday, but I'll be around and trail-ready most others.
The Searchers can't possibly be as good as "The Terror of Tiny Town"
