I was going to talk about my bike ride and how it was and what that meant to me, but listen to this:
It's apparent why I had to stop.
Well, it was drizzly and I needed some coffee.
The Big Dummy in "HUFFY" livery...to "keep the tweakers away".
Fuji branded saddle from the 70s, with a second layer of leather underlying the main piece in a sneaky hammock manner. Never treated with anything.
I know damn well he polishes those rivets with a special vinegar paste he's concocted.
Conduit epoxied in place to prevent (further) deformation of the boom tube. The kickstand is authorized Surly/Xtracycle parts, but this guy runs a heavy load.
Custom.
This is how he does it.
I went in and got my coffee. This guy was not hard to pick out as the rider,
and was more than happy to talk about his rig. It was a very (long) inneresting conversation. He's been running an 8speed Alfine for the past year and a half. Says it's going strong. The straight chainline alone is convincing me. His load is 362lbs. That's a solid recommendation.
8 years of touring. He started in Boston and headed to Seattle in an attempt to get happy, realized it was the greatest time of his whole life and kept on. He's only a little bit crazier than you, but look at the time he's having.

Baby baby baby
Baby baby baby
Baby baby baby
I'm gonna
Heh heh heh haay
Come on now
You caught me at Junior.
I want to be where its not cold...
Mr. Reverend.
Slightly skewing from the matter at hand but... in the Spring a small group of drunk Midwesterners are looking to do a week or so ride... possibly desert or some other interesting terrain, something for the most part fairly flat... since most will be single or fixed while carrying gear...got any recommended areas to look into?
I'm a guy that likes to party.
And stay out late at night.
I love all those party faces,
and those pretty party lights.
Houvenagle, a small group of drunks on bikes cannot lose. I got nothing on the flats, I lik the climb. Try Adventure Cycling for rails-to-trails routes. Those have good grades. Isn't there a route that follows the Mississippi?
Any flatlanders reading who can field this?
I've seen Antler bike around plenty lately, roosted him near the C-Side C-Horse on my way to work today.
On a related note, many of the resident biking hobos at Mry State Beach have grown luxurious winter beards, and are looking hell o tight.
It feels good to look at those smut pictures.
I am especially curious as to what magic talismans are cached inside those two saddle-mounted scrota. Not that it’s anyone’s business.
Looks like he’s got it together.
I asked him that very question and he said it was his "little joke with the motorcycle guys." He says they have twin pipes, so does he; each bag contains a pipe.
He was a very sharp guy.
Ok rev you got me on this one. but whatever your on it is very expensive!
Amen Reverend, Amen.
I particularly like the "re-purposing" of the Huffy brand.
I have to admit absolute student feral status in the presence of Antler Bike Man. I have met several feral "Masters" in my few score on this lump of spinning moldy rock and I must say they are almost all willing to teach if you are willing to approach and sincerely listen.
When you see Antler Bike Man again, please give him my sincere regards.
Feral
As I was talking with him, another mechanic with whom I used to work walked out of the coffee shop. He gave me a look- as though to say "What a kook." I called him over and when he actually looked at the rig, he saw all the camouflaged goodness. (The guy had a DT front hub, among other things.) When I spoke with the mechanic the next day, he said he'd seen the antlers and turned away, assuming it was a crazy junk bike.
According to plan, I'd say.
